Magnus’ earliest memories are of looking out at his small world from inside the warm genitank in which he was suspended; fed intravenously; breathing fluid. He remembers the biomechanical forms of his carers and the alien faces of the xenos who would visit to speak with the Tech-Priests and peer at him with strange eyes. This is how it was until one day his world rumbled and shook. He watched his carers quickly gathering some things and destroying others. One of the only parents he ever known gave him a last look through the glassteel, punched a button flushing the warm liquid from the tank, then they all left him. Unused to gravity’s pull he crumpled to the floor of the tank, unable to move, struggling to breath, waiting to die…
Magnus was found on a heretekal Mechanicus space station deep in the Koronus Expanse during a raid by troops of Cromwell Trade Dynasty. At the time he looked to be 7, though as it turned out, he was significantly younger. His first experience of human touch was being lift by rough hands and pressed against cold armour as he was carried to the Eternal Praetorian. He remembers too the months on the ship, the people who watched over him and the ghosts that spoke to him in his dreams.
When eventually he was handed over to the Adeptus Mechanicus on Port Wander, he was able to thank the men who had saved him and greet the Tech-Priests who came to collect him. The priests studied him, did tests, asked him questions about the former carers that looked as they did, and about the others.
In time he was brought before the Magos Toronus. She explained that he was a clone, a child of wrought of science, and that now he was too remain with the Adeptus Mechanicus else a worse fate await him. Thus began Magnus’ training in the ways of the Machine Cult, under the sometimes distant but always watchful eye of his mistress. His keen intellect served him well, he rapidly assimilated the teachings of the Omnissiah and in time, Magnus Severus-VII Pax accepted the Mechanicus Implants crafted by the great Magos herself, with great pride.
Toronus, though often a harsh mentor, always encouraged that pride, the fierce streak of independence and the fearless pursuit of knowledge of his past, of xenos and archeotech, the science that brought him into being. All of which made him perfect serve her and the Omnissiah as an Explorator in the vast unknowns of the Koronus Expanse. Magnus Severus-VII Pax has spent some years serving both in the Explorator Fleet and with Passage Watch 27 Est of Battlefleet Calixis. He has seen battle and beings from the Warp, discovered archeotech devices, studied and fought xenos. In all that time he has never once seen a trace of the species that helped create him.
On his return from his last secondment in the Expanse, Magnus was summoned for his customary debriefing with the Magos. After the lengthy reunion he was his new assignment – travel to Scintilla to accept an Enginseer Prime position with the Cromwell Trade House on a new vessel. He didn’t know then that the Omnissiah’s plan was leading him not only to his past, but back to the Eternal Praetorian…
